What is Oshibori?
Oshibori is a simple wet hand towel, which is supposed to cleanse one’s self in the absence of running water. Before modern sewer systems were established, people used wet towels to wipe their bodies. In Japan, during the Edo period(17-19AC), Inns provided travelers with Oke (a Japanese bucket) of water and wet towels to freshen up upon arrival, and this practice is considered the beginning of the Japanese Oshibori service.
Nowadays, Oshibori are suitable in any hospitality, travel, office, or service setting. *It can be served both hot or cold, depending on the temperature or season. Serving Oshibori towels to guests is not only a way to let them clean their hands but also a way to show hospitality like welcoming, respecting, and offering relaxation to guests. Generally, it is common to see this being served in restaurants, bars, airports, and long-distance trains (like the Shinkansen) in Japan.
